The Lime Ridge Open Space, shared by Walnut Creek and Concord, is home to many beautiful nature trails, rolling hills, and a diversity of wildlife. The name came from years of lime mining, as the area was once flooded with shallow seas and lime sediments, but has since grown an abundance of grasses, trees, and flowers.

This is about a four mile hike, with some strenuous uphill climbs (I’ve seen this hike rated in guide books as moderate, but that may be somewhat deceptive). You’ll find the Staging Area in San Ramon at the very west end of Bollinger Canyon Road.

To reach the peak, take the Bollinger Creek Trail to the Las Trampas Ridge Trail. The entrance to Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve is at a low point in the spine of the Oakland Hills, where the steep eastern arm of Thornhill canyon has cut headward toward the equally steep canyon of San Leandro Creek.

Both canyons are steep because the rock between them is the tough Claremont saddle between the two canyons provides good views. DIVISION OF MINES AND GEOLOGY SAN FRANCISCO DISTRICT OFFICE FERRY BUILDING SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Phone ) (Phone ) Septem Charles R.
